| 01/2008 - Trendsetting: Rounding Up Small Change Generates Some Real Change |
|
SuperMomz.com an online retailer of products for busy moms and moms-to-be, announced a partnership agreement with
Change Round-Up, Inc. to enable e-shoppers to round-up their online purchases and donate their electronic "spare change" to
charity.
With a simple click of the mouse, online shoppers at SuperMomz will be able to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar,
or designate any amount to the Los Angeles Diaper Drive, a nonprofit organization that collects and distributes diapers to
low-income families in need.
Julie Zarchi, the founder of SuperMomz, has never met most of her customers but she knows what they want. Zarchi conducted a
survey last month of 500 moms from across the nation. The study found that 90 percent of the moms make charitable
contributions at least one time per year and 48 percent said they think it's important to support businesses that contribute to
their favorite causes.
"Busy moms want to give back to their communities, but they want a quick and easy process and they want to know that their
donations are making a difference. A partnership with Change Round-Up is a perfect fit for us," Zarchi said.
SuperMomz's partnership with Change Round-Up is part of an emerging fundraising trend. As operating costs have soared and budgets
have been slashed, companies and consumers alike have been looking for ways to improve fundraising profitability while
focusing on the needs of their local communities.
Change Round-Up deducts 10 percent of donations received to cover administrative costs, far below the 35 percent standard for
fundraising costs set by the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance. Retailers sign up for the Change Round-Up service
at no cost. Many select 4-5 charities and set up matching fund programs that align with the causes they and their customers
support. Any 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization is eligible to join the Change Round-Up nonprofit network. All donations are
tax deductible.
"It was sad and shocking to me to find out that many Los Angeles moms reuse diapers," Zarchi said. "They shouldn't have to
choose between buying food or buying diapers. I knew we could help."
